What does Non-VBV mean in online payments and how does it impact transaction security?

I see Non-VBV discussed in the context of online payments. From how I see it, it concerns transactions where there is no requirement for “Verified by Visa” and no other authentication. Can someone explain in detail what Non-VBV means, what security concerns it raises for customers and merchants, and does it still hold any risk in 2025 with contemporary payment systems?

Non-VBV means a transaction that skips Visa’s extra security step (Verified by Visa). While faster, it leaves both cardholders and merchants more exposed to fraud. In 2025, most systems use Visa Secure (3-D Secure 2.0), which is safer and more reliable.

That’s a really good question, and I’m glad you ask. I can see why some people would be confused about Non-VBV transactions since most people are used to OTP and Verified by Visa. Non-VBV means the payment goes through without those checks. But, the explanation does NOT excuse them as a payment protection system, and THAT is the problem with Non-VBV payments. Fewer checks can mean more fraudulent transactions and chargebacks.

From a customer’s viewpoint, it means more chances of unauthorized payments. As for merchants, it means a chargeback and potential loss of the product. As for 2025, payment systems are much stronger, and that is true for systems with EMV 3-D Secure and multi-factorauthentication. However, it is NOT the ban on Non-VBV transactions, and that is why it is crucial for customers and merchants alike to understand the potential risks and try to take a more balanced approach.

Great job in your article. I think it does a nice job of opening up this discussion, and it is something more people should be aware of.

Non-VBV (Non–Verified by Visa) means an online payment that skips Visa’s 3D Secure verification step like OTP or password. It makes checkout faster but also less secure, since there’s no extra identity check. While convenient, Non-VBV transactions carry higher fraud risk, so using VBV or 3D Secure cards is safer for online payments.
