My iPhone isn’t reading my SD card reader, and I’m confused about formats, adapters, and supported file types. Anyone who has solved this, please guide me 🙏📌

Hey everyone,

I don’t usually post online, but I’m honestly stuck and a bit frustrated right now 😅. I bought a new SD card reader because I wanted a simple way to pull photos from my camera straight into my iPhone. It sounded like a five-minute thing, but I still can’t figure out how to use sd card reader on iphone without running into some kind of problem.

So here’s what’s happening. The moment I plug the reader in, absolutely nothing happens. No pop-up, no notification, not even an error. I opened the Photos app and the Files app just in case I was supposed to tap something first, but both look exactly the same as before. I tried restarting the phone, switching the SD card, and even cleaning the connector because someone online said dust can block the connection 😐

A few things I’m unsure about and can’t find one clear answer:

– Do iPhones only read certain formats?
– Does the SD card need to be empty or freshly formatted?
– Is this a power issue? My reader doesn’t have its own power source.
– Are only original Apple adapters reliable, or do third-party ones actually work for anyone?
– Also, does card size matter? Mine is 128GB, maybe that’s too much?

I’m not trying to do anything crazy. I just want a quick way to move my travel photos without sitting down at a laptop every single time. If someone here has gone through this and finally got it working, please tell me what actually helped. Even the smallest detail might be the thing I’m missing.

Thanks in advance to anyone who replies ❤️📩

If your iPhone isn’t reading your SD card reader, it’s usually one of three common issues: format, power, or the adapter.

Here’s the quick fix checklist:

✅ Format the SD card as exFAT (iPhone doesn’t read NTFS).
✅ Make sure your photos/videos are inside a DCIM folder — if this folder is missing, the iPhone shows nothing.
✅ Use a good-quality or powered adapter. On Lightning iPhones, cheap readers often fail because they don’t get enough power.
✅ Supported files only: iPhone imports JPEG/PNG/HEIF + MP4/MOV. Unsupported formats simply won’t appear.
✅ 128GB is fine — card size isn’t your issue.

Most people find the problem is either the adapter not getting enough power or the DCIM folder not being structured correctly.

If you fix those two, your iPhone should read the SD card instantly.

iPhone SD card reader not working usually means 1 of 3 issues:
1️⃣ SD card must be exFAT
2️⃣ Photos/Videos must be inside DCIM folder
3️⃣ Adapter needs enough power (especially on Lightning iPhones)

128GB works fine. Fix these three things → iPhone detects instantly.

If you're wondering how to use SD card reader on iPhone, follow these quick steps:
✔ Format card to exFAT
✔ Put camera files inside DCIM
✔ Use a reliable/powered adapter
✔ Import through Photos → Import

Most “nothing happens” issues are due to power or missing DCIM folder.
